Lang Ping is the first person in volleyball history to win a gold medal as both a player and a coach at the Olympics.

Lang Ping, the “Iron Hammer”, was born in Beijing in 1960. When she was a child, she wanted to join a basketball team like her sister, but when she was a teenager, her PE teacher advised her to try volleyball instead, and she did. She trained the hardest in the volleyball team and she became the fastest and strongest player. At 18, she joined the national team and were out of all shoes every month! From 1981 to 1986, she helped the Chinese women’s volleyball team win five world championships.

After her career ended in 1986, Lang Ping played and coached volleyball abroad. When she knew the Chinese women’s volleyball team needed her, she returned as the head coach in 2013. With her talent and efforts, Lang Ping led the team to win the 2015 World Cup, and she became one of the most respected sports heroes in China. And at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, she led the team to the gold medal. After the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Lang Ping stepped down as head coach. She worked hard for Chinese women’s volleyball for over 40 years. Her spirit and love for volleyball continue to inspire people all walks of life today.
